The Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola has said the judiciary will live up to its responsibilities and ensure balance and fairness among the electoral players in the 2023 general elections.

The Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria said this during a two-day Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association Section of Public Interest and Development Law, NBA-SPIDEL in Abuja.

Over 600 lawyers and key players are attending the Spidel conference with the various speakers carefully selected to do justice to the theme, “The undermining of Judicial Authority in Democracy”.

In a message to the conference, the Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria, noted that over time, political actors have continuously played within the exclusive terrain of the Judiciary on issues of politics, thereby whittling the sanctity, and authority of the courts.

The keynote speaker, Justice iInyang Jihn-okoro, of the Supreme Court did not mince words in calling for the sanctioning of violators of court orders as such amount to affront on the
justice system.

A human rights activists, Femi Falana, and the Chairman of the NBA-SPIDEL, Monday Ubani, as well as other speakers insist that strengthening judicial authority is key.

The conference is examining the “Disobedience to Court Orders and the Slide to State of Anarchy”, as well as “Strengthening Judicial Authority in a Democracy” – through Effective & Sustainable Strategies.”
