2023 Polls: CSOs want FG to halt fake news purveyance

Ahead of the 2023 General Elections, a Coalition of Civil Society Organisations has called on the Federal Government to put in place, policies that will reduce the damages caused by fake news.

Addressing journalists at a street protest in Abuja, one of the groups under the coalition, “United Nigeria” said the tension in Nigeria will escalate if misinformation and fake news are not tackled.

The group urged the Nigerian media to do background checks on their sources and monitor every news aired both on
Social and regular media for credibility and accuracy.

Recall that in 2021, the Nigerian government said it has discovered about 476 online news websites set up to confront the federal government and create confusion with ‘fake news’ adding that Nigerians erroneously believed the misinformation churned out by these paid agents of destabilisation
