Workers in Rivers state have called on the state government to revitalize the state owned moribund agric farms in order to avert looming food crisis in the country.

The state Chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress NLC chairman Alex Ikechi and his counterparts, the Trade Union Congress TUC chairman Ikechukwu Onyefuru who also made the appeal during the workers day celebration in Port Harcourt at the Yakubo Gowon Stadium said they will also mobilize their affiliate members to resist the recent hike in electricity tariffs.

The usual funfare, match past and other side attractions that normally characterized workers day celebrations was evident in the 2024 edition in Port Harcourt as workers commended governor Sim Fubara for his labour friendly policies that have put smiles on their faces.

The labour leaders however frowned at the moribund state of the agric sector and appealed to the Rivers State chief executive to look inwards and resuscitate the agric sector to guarantee food security.

They also urged the state government to also invest in the railways and oil and gas industry to boost revenue and create more job opportunities.

The chairman of the Rivers State trade union Congress TUC Comrade Ikechukwu Onyefuru who later addressed a world press conference called on the All Progressives Congress APC led federal government to rescind its decision to increase electricity tariffs in the interest of the suffering masses.

The theme for this year’s may day twenty twenty four is “ensuring workers safety and health at work in a changing climate”
