Nigeria’s House of Representatives has denied allegations of soliciting bribes from Vice-Chancellors of Federal Universities to approve their 2025 budget allocations.
A statement by the House Spokesperson, Akin Rotimi Jnr, described the report of the allegation published by the Premium Times as lacking any diligent investigative effort but only amplifies fabricated narratives by individuals seeking to evade accountability.
The House Spokesperson accused the newspaper of not getting an official reaction from the parliament before publishing the story which, according to him, undermines its credibility and professionalism.
The statement noted that some heads of federal tertiary institutions have chosen to come up with unfounded accusations and blackmail after failing to appear for their Budget Defence Sessions and refusing to reply summons from the House public Accounts Committee for series of pending audit queries from the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation
The statement encouraged anyone with credible evidence of misconduct to present it to the appropriate authorities, including the House Committee on Ethics and Privileges, anti-corruption agencies like the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to independently investigate any claim of impropriety.
