The Niger State chapter Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN and Bishop of Catholic Diocese of Kontagora, Most Reverend Bulus Yohanna, has warned Nigerians and Christians that silence will not be golden when electing a listening leader.
Yohanna, who stated this in Minna, said to guard against this, Nigerians and Christians of voting age should obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and participate actively in politics.
The call by the clergyman comes in response to the recent protests in some quarters by some Christian communities alleging marginalisation.
The State CAN chairman, expressed concern over what he said were disparities in political appointments and selections, saying Christians and Nigerians must wake up and become part of the political process.
Bishop Yohanna added that political apathy should not be mistaken for protest, insisting that Christians who refuse to vote would have little basis to complain about the government that emerges from the process.
This view is also shared by 87-year-old elder statesman and retired civil servant, Peterson Kaura, who served as the former Chairman of the Niger State Local Government Service Commission, urging Christian youths to reject the notion that politics is inherently dirty.
The retired elder challenged Christian youths to contest for political positions from the Ward level to the State and Federal levels, saying their participation would allow them to influence decisions and bring the values of honesty, transparency and service into governance.
Both Bishop Yohanna and Elder Kaura also used the medium to call on political leaders at all levels to govern for the benefit of all citizens, irrespective of who voted for them. Mm
