There seems no end in sight to the leadership crisis rocking the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
Two parallel presidential candidates have emerged for the 2027 general elections, with rival factions both claiming legitimacy amid deep-seated rift with implications for the party’s presidential ambitions.
The ambitions of over 8,200 PDP members reported to be aspiring for different political positions are now hanging in the balance. As the 2027 general elections draw close, rival factions are sticking to their guns, plotting each other’s political downfall.
The divisions could not have been more stark with two camps producing two presidential candidates.
While the Abdulrahman Mohammed-led PDP which has Senator Sandy Onor as its candidate claims it holds the authentic mandate, the Kabiru Turaki-led group which has handed its 2027 presidential ticket to former President Goodluck Jonathan refuses to back down.
National Publicity Secretary for the Abdulrahman Mohammed faction, Jungudu Mohammed, insists there is no internal crisis. He warns that those parading themselves as a rival faction will soon face legal consequences.
Imo State PDP Chairman, Austin Nwachukwu, who is one of the key actors who dragged the party to court strongly echoes this stance.
But the opposing camp fires back. Ini Ememobong, National Publicity Secretary for the Turaki-led faction, labels the Mohammed group an illegal entity.
Ememobong accuses the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, of engineering the crisis to destroy opposition parties. Despite the turmoil, he reassures supporters that the PDP remains strong and ready to reclaim power.
With the PDP leadership deeply fractured, over 8,200 aspirants who bought nomination forms from different factions are now trapped in a dangerous political limbo. With 2027 fast approaching, the ultimate survival of Nigeria’s main opposition party remains to be seen.
