Two months into Phase II of the Continuous Voter Registration, CVR exercise by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC in Enugu State has recorded no fewer than 31,689 new registrants.
Stare Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC, Chukwuemeka Chukwu, made this known while briefing journalists on the progress of the exercise at the Commission’s head office in Enugu.
While describing the figure as encouraging, the REC says the turnout is still far from what the Commission expects it to be, noting that participation in several local government areas remains noticeably low.
He wants political parties, traditional rulers, civil society groups and other stakeholders to step up grassroots mobilisation and encourage eligible citizens to take advantage of the registration window.
The situation in Enugu State reflects a wider trend in South East as the geo-political zone continues to record the lowest turnout in the CVR exercise among the six geopolitical zones.
