A total of 397 Local government areas (LGAs) out of 774 in 36 states and the FCT are at risk of flooding.

The minister of state for Agriculture and food security, Sabi Abdullahi who made this known at the implementation component workshop for National Agricultural Growth Scheme Agro- Pocket (NAGS-AP) wants farmers to insure their farms against risks and shocks from natural disasters.

Like the Growth Enhancement Support Scheme (GES) of the Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, the National Agricultural Growth Scheme Agro- Pocket (NAGS-AP) is federal government programme that provides subsidized inputs and incentives to farmers to address food security challenges.

However, with the increasing rate of natural disasters devastating farms across the country, the minister of state for Agriculture and food security, Sabi Abdullahi is calling for climate risk mitigation solutions to close protection gaps arising from climate change risks such as floods, droughts, pests, diseases, among others.

The collective concern is that the risks have now become central issues affecting the government, financiers, and the beneficiary farmers, hence the need to incorporate National Agriculture insurance as part of the programme’s component for farms protection and farmers benefit.

The workshop is expected to collect stakeholders’ views that would be decoded to form the basis of developing the insurance Component of the National Agricultural Growth Scheme Agro- Pocket (NAGS-AP) Project.
