49 Inmates freed from Kaduna, Zaria jails after payment of fines

Forty nine inmates from Kaduna and Zaria correctional facilities have been released upon payment of their fines after serving various sentences.


The freed inmates, though delighted with their release, described their time behind bars as challenging and unpleasant.


Among the freed inmates from Kaduna correctional facility is 27 year old Dogara Hassan, convicted of an assault that resulted in injury.


He received a one-year sentence and a 120,000-Naira fine.


Unable to pay, Hassan was kept in custody, as his parents faced financial constraints.
However, after six months, Hassan has regained his freedom, along with 39 other inmates at the Kaduna Correctional Centre.


Dr. Mahadi Shehu, who has been working to secure freedom for individuals held due to unpaid fines or compensation, facilitated Hassan’s release, along with those of 39 other inmates and expressed delight at the development Nine inmates were released from the Zaria Correctional facility.


Their freedom was also secured following the payment of outstanding fines, This development highlights some of the challenges faced within the Nigerian judicial system and the need for reforms.
