A total of 95 aspirants have so far indicated their interest for the stool of the Awujale of Ijebuland in Ogun State.

This follows the right of way according to the traditional rites in Ijebuland for the Fusengbuwa royal family to present the next ruling lineage to occupy the position.

Out of the total number of aspirants to the throne that is usually dominated by princes from the ruling houses for consideration by the king makers, one of them this time around is a princess.

The exercise, which started on Monday in Ijebu Ode, was peaceful and was supervised by the Ijebu Ode Local Government, with the hope of having the next Awujale King shortly.

Like most conscious traditional and cultural Yoruba men, many were interested in the exercise that led to the enthronement of the Alaafin of Oyo, and similarly, an average Ijebu man is also interested in who emerges as the next Awujale of Ijebuland.

The throne of the Awujale, occupied by the late Oba Kayode Adetona, who joined his ancestors in July 2025, marked the end of a 65-year significant reign of an enigma.

Over 200 princes, princesses, and stakeholders, including the Ijebu Ode Local Government authority, have gathered to ensure that the institution of Obaship that will provide the next Awujale of Ijebuland is strictly obeyed.

The 94 princes and one princess were represented at the nomination ceremony by two members of their families as the tradition requires for consideration by the king makers after consulting the gods among other traditional rites.

Having nominated close to 100 potential Awujale-designate, it is now the task of the custodians of the traditional throne, also known as the kingmakers, to choose only one out of the 95 contestants as the new occupier of the reverred throne as soon as possible.

The person chosen will be recommended to the Ogun State government to be officially enthroned as the next Awujale of Ijebuland.
