The Coronavirus Isolation Centre Yargaya in Kano State will be overwhelmed in the event of the spread of the disease.
The 14-bed capacity hospital is the only facility in the whole of North-West Nigeria designated for response to potential outbreak in that part of the country.
The Yargaya Isolation Hospital which was originally built to handle infectious diseases like Lassa fever, Monkey Pox, bird flu only recently saw the deployment of more trained doctors and nurses as the country recorded its first Coronavirus case.
The Kano State Director of Public Health and Disease Control, Dr. Imam Bello says the Centre is now furnished and ready in the event of a suspected case of Coronavirus.
He explains that they are working with health officials at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport Kano in the area of surveillance.
The Chief Medical Director of the isolation centre, Dr. Muhammad Abdullahi says the hospital has 14-bed capacity though the government is working on having an additional isolation centre at the Aminu Kano University Teaching Hospital and other state hospitals.
Investigation by AIT shows that the government must upgrade the Yargaya centre for it to meet the challenge posed by Coronavirus threat.
The isolation hospital though not fully furnished is expected to handle cases of any outbreak of Coronavirus in Kano, Jigawa, Kaduna, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, and Kebbi States
