In yet another proactive step to halt further spread of Coronavirus in Bayelsa State, the Security Sub-committee of the State Task Force on Covid-19 has again demolished what it describes as illegal market structures at the popular Etegwe Roundabout in Yenagoa, the state capital.

The demolition took place in the early hours of Sunday with the traders lamenting that ample time was not given to enable them source for other alternatives.

The Etegwe Roundabout has grown to being one of the most populous markets within the Yenagoa metropolis.

Traders on Sunday morning watched with helplessness as their stalls are brought to the ground by the bulldozer.

According to the State Government, the exercise is coming after months of warning.

With sober faces the traders try to gather what is left of the shacks that once sheltered their goods.

The Deputy Chairman of the Covid-19 Task Force and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Apoku Nathaniel says the exercise is timely and long over due.

He notes that the market has become a high risk area for possible transmission of Coronavirus due to its over crowded nature with little or no compliance to social distancing.

The demolition is coming barely 3 weeks after the team visited the largest Swali Market and pulled down some illegal structures.

Bayelsa State presently has a total of 6 Covid-19 cases, 5 have been treated and discharged while the remaining active case is under care at the treatment centre of the Niger Delta University Teaching Hospital, Okolobiri.
