The Chief Judge of Cross River State, Justice Akon Ikpeme says the state judiciary will carry out decongestion of Calabar Custodian Centres, worrying that the volume of inmates awaiting trials is alarming.
Justice Ikpeme stated this during the 2023/24 Legal year beginning held at the High Court complex, Mary Slessor Centre, in Calabar.
She said some inmates have been at the centre awaiting trial beyond their convicting years, making the space inhabitable for inhabitants.

She commended the judiciary and its staff for a successful 2022/23 legal year, urging them that hard work, increased productivity, efficient justice delivery, speedy dispensation of cases should be their watchwords in the new Legal year.
On his part, Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu represented by his deputy, Peter Odey pledged to equip the State judiciary for effective dispensation of justice in the State.
Senior lawyers who witnessed the event which started from the church include former Senate leader Victor Ndoma Egba, SAN, Mba Ukweni, SAN and Dr. Kanu Agabi, SAN among others.
