Some lecturers in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State have frowned at the move by the federal government to automatically deduct forty percent of Internally Generated Revenue, IGR from academic institutions in the country.
According to them, deducting a whooping forty percent of IGR from the institutions would further worsen the already degenerated tertiary institutions which they said are underfunded.
They rather called on the federal government to ensure better ways of monitoring the use of finances in the institutions.
The federal government through the Ministry of Finance had notified academic institutions across the country of its plan to automatically deduct 40 percent from their Internally Generated Revenue.
This move by the Nigerian authorities appeared to have taken away bright faces from lecturers.
Lamenting that the move could further worsen the nation’s academic situation, the lecturers say monitoring the movement of finances is a better approach.
Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of Universities ASUU said the government’s plan will further impoverish the university system.
