Angry Protesters in Enugu metropolis, South East Nigeria went on rampage on Wednesday as most part of the city recorded violent protests.

The protesting youths who are demanding for good governance and total reforms of the Nigeria Police Force, blocked major routes and setting bonfires.

Businesses and schools which were already in session hurriedly shut down as residents scampered for safety.

Ait.live gathered that the protests began from the densely populated Abakpa Nike areas, a suburb of Enugu city, as large numbers of the youths poured into the streets before blocking the ever busy NOWAS roundabout in Trans Ekulu.

The protests spilled over to the Ogui road junction, popular Otigba and New Heaven junctions.

Motorists and passers-by carried green leaves as a symbol of solidarity as they made their ways through the tensed environments.

Soldiers are reported to have taken over all routes leading to the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Emene, an area that recently witnessed a violent clash between security agents and suspected members of the proscribed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra, IPOB, which claimed a high number of casualties.

Most schools in Enugu city have shut down with students and pupils ordered to remain at home till further notice, although there is no official statement from the state government.

There are no visible presence of security operatives on the streets of Enugu, except at all the roads and entrances leading to the Government House, the seat of power in the state where soldiers, mobile policemen and other sister agencies are stationed.

Meanwhile, the Enugu State Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew in Enugu East, Enugu North, and Enugu South Local Government Areas, effective from 7 pm today, Wednesday, October 21, 2020, until further notice.
