Southern Conference of the Methodist Church in Taraba State, North-East Nigeria has called on the appropriate authorities to address the new wave of abductions in Yorro Local Government Area or the people will resort to self-defence.
In a reaction, the Taraba State Police Command says it has mapped out strategies to tackle the wave of insecurity in the area. Yorro Local Government Area in Northern Taraba State has lately become a black spot for series of abductions.
Despite been located few kilometres away from the state capital, Jalingo, the manner several persons are being abducted has become a source of great concern to the residents.
The Southern Conference of the Methodist Church in Taraba State says the area is under siege, with its pastors and members as some of the targets.
The church alleged that despite raising N11 million which was paid as ransom to secure the release of five of its members from the abductors, none of the victims has been freed. The church leadership therefore wants the appropriate authorities to do the needful or the people will resort to self-defence.
The Commissioner of Police in Taraba State, Joseph Eribo says new strategies are in place to address the security challenge, he however cautioned against self-defence which he says will escalate the situation.
He rather calls for the cooperation of the affected communities through information sharing with the security agencies.
At least 30 people have been abducted in Yorro Local Government Area within a span of two weeks, and the victims include a police man, traditional ruler, as well as clergymen, among several others.
Though some of the victims have been released, at least 15 are said to still be in captivity.
