ZAMFARA STATE

A State of Emergency in the health sector has been declared in Zamfara State.

Governor Dauda Lawal made the declaration with a commitment to revamp the state’s healthcare system.

In a state-wide broadcast on Tuesday, the governor pointed out the disturbing conditions of the hospitals across Zamfara.

A statement by the spokesman for the governor, Sulaiman Idris, disclosed that the declaration came after the governor’s unscheduled visit to Gusau’s General Hospitals.

According to him, the hospitals urgently need intervention due to the poor state of facilities, equipment, and workers.

Governor Lawal said his administration will improve the quality of all the general hospitals through massive infrastructural development, provision of state-of-the-art medical equipment, the establishment of standard laboratories for proper diagnosis, and provision of free maternal and child healthcare to reduce maternal and child morbidity and mortality.

The administration will also establish an affordable and comprehensive health insurance scheme, provide access to quality healthcare services for all citizens of Zamfara State, and distribute the necessary equipment and essential medicines to all hospitals across the 14 local government areas.

It further said the administration will improve the ongoing Special Modified Medical Outreach, for which his government has already completed two phases, with free services to individuals with cataracts, groyne swellings such as hernias and hydroceles, vesicovaginal fistula repair and health education.
