The Plateau State government has resolved to demolish any structure within the State that does not conform to laid-down building regulations, to avoid endangering the lives of citizens.

This was made known during an assessment of a four-storey Mall under construction after a section of the building collapsed on Sunday in the Terminus area of Jos.

Part of the shopping mall under construction with 180 shops in Terminus, the heart of Jos commercial area, collapsed on Sunday for non-adherence to standards according to authorities.

The General Manager of the Jos Metropolitan Development Board who led the inspection team to the site, accused the contractor handling the project of falsifying several documents it submitted to the Board and is guilty of making alterations to the original building design.

The State Commissioner for Housing and Urban Development, who was also on the ground, said the State government will not tolerate a situation where developers will cut corners only to endanger the lives of citizens.

Members of professional bodies in the construction industry gave their assessments of the site after the inspection, insisting that the structure poses potential danger to the people.

Having had ugly incidents of building collapses in recent times, the Plateau State government agencies and professional bodies are clamping down on substandard building projects in the State.
