Grains makers and processors at the Dawanau International market in Kano state have decried the high expenditure on diesel to power their processing machines and want the federal government to take up a special power project in the market to ameliorate the landing cost of food commodities in the country.
In a communiqué signed by its chairman Muttaka Isah and read by its spokesperson, Abubakar Usman at the end of its meeting in Kano on Sunday, the traders also want the federal government to address the cases of insecurity scaring farmers from going to farm.
The meeting by the leadership of Dawanu international grains market in Kano is to find ways of cutting down the cost of production, which has negative multiplier effects on the final cost of food commodities due to hike in price of diesel used in their mills.
After hours of deliberation, it was evident that a special electricity line is required from Bichi to Dawanu market, estimated to gulp about one billion naira hence, a call on the federal government to intervene in this regard, considering the importance of the market to national food security.
Abubakar Usman who read the communiqué on behalf of the market leadership, expresses fears that food insecurity might be worse-off this year, if farmers are not protected to return to their farms.
The meeting is one among several others held in the past one month since the hike in price of commodities started as part of their contributions towards ameliorating current national hunger crisis.
