Residents of Benin City, Edo State capital, have called for further extension beyond the January 19 deadline for linking SIM numbers to the National Identity Numbers, NIN, presently being carried out by telecommunication operators in the country.
This is coming on the heels of the frustration, torture, and helplessness that characterizes the process at the various enrolment centers in Benin City where the majority of the people are yet to enroll to get their National Identity Numbers.
Though the National Identity Number enrolment has been continuous for years, residents of Benin City who are yet to register to say the process of enrolment was not properly organized to meet the proposed deadline of January 19.
They want decentralization registration centers to enable them to meet up with the registration exercise so as to obtain their National Identification Number, a process aimed at curbing the rising cases of terrorism and banditry in the country.

Coordinator of the NIMC centers in Edo state, Christiana Oki, says the commission was overwhelmed with the crowd that besieges the centers daily, even as she blamed those who were yet to enroll for not taking advantage of the process which has been on for over eight years.
While residents continue to make efforts to enroll for the national identity number in order to link their phone lines, they urged the federal government to extend the deadline from January 19 to enable them to register.
