Normalcy is gradually returning to Effium community in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, South-East Nigeria, after days of bloody communal clashes between neighbours in Effium and Ezza-Effium.
This is coming after the State Government’s intervention on Sunday leading to the arrest and parade of several suspects by the police.

Since Friday, the Effium community has been a theatre of violent crisis. What is now left at the scene are horrible pictures of carnage and destruction.

Police sources say at least 8 persons have died and scores wounded in the days the violence persisted in the area.

Locals told newsmen that the conflict was triggered by a leadership tussle involving members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Effium branch, which degenerated along tribal lines between Effium speaking natives and their Ezza counterparts.

ait.live observes that many houses, cars and other properties were severally touched, as the crisis escalated into the community, leaving many displaced.

A joint security force, led by the State Deputy Governor, Kelechi Igwe, and the Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Garba stormed the community early Sunday in a move to quell the situation.

The operation saw the arrest of no fewer than 60 suspects from both sides of the conflict, while some ammunitions were also recovered.
Meanwhile, Governor Dave Umahi has placed a 4pm to 8am curfew to prevent further breakdown of law and order in the affected Effium community.
