Nigerian custodial centres across the country will soon be relocated to more befitting and secured areas, following the jail break that saw the escape of 119 inmates from the Medium Custodial Centre in Suleja, Niger state.
Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, who disclosed this during an on-the-spot assessment of the centre said the facility houses 499 inmates, as opposed to the initial 250 that the facility was built to accommodate.
Tunji- ojo also confirmed that with the collaboration of sister security agencies, 10 fleeing inmates have so far been recaptured, while 109 are still on the run.
It was reported earlier that the incident occurred after a downpour that lasted for several hours on the night of Wednesday, April 24, 2024 which wreaked havoc on the facility.
The downpour caused severe damage to the custodial centre’s infrastructure, including a breach in the perimetre fence, allowing some of the inmates to flee.
