The Day of the African Child is celebrated annually on June 16. It was initiated in 1991 by the Organisation of African Unity, OAU, now the African Union, A.U. and meant to honour those who participated in South Africa’s Soweto Uprising in 1976 where many were killed on the streets.

The day is also marked to raise awareness of the need for improvement of child education in Africa.
