Enugu State Government in South-East Nigeria has issued a stern warning that there will be no public holiday on Thursday, May 30, 2024.
The government is therefore urging residents to continue with their normal activities and assures them of protection by security operatives on that day.
The announcement follows a directive by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB declaring a sit-at-home day across the South-East on May 30, which the secessionist group has designated as the “Biafra Heroes Day.”

In a statement signed by the Enugu State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Aka Eze Aka, the government disapproved of this move, highlighting the severe impact it would have on residents, especially students sitting for the ongoing Senior School Certificate Examination, SSCE, particularly the compulsory General Mathematics papers slated for that day.
The government urged candidates and examination officials to proceed with their duties as the State had implemented adequate security measures to ensure their safety. The government further condemned the attempt to impose a sit-at-home order, which had previously harmed the socio-economic life of the region.
Reinforcing this stance, the Enugu State Head of Service, Ken Ugwu, in a circular dated May 28, 2024, warned civil servants and political appointees that failure to report to work on Thursday would result in severe sanctions, including summary dismissal in accordance with Public Service Rules.
