In observance of the World Environment Day, themed “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” the Cross River State government has underscored its unwavering dedication to environmental conservation and proactive measures against land degradation.

At an event held in Calabar, Governor Bassey Otu, represented by his Deputy Governor Peter Odey, articulated the state’s intensified efforts to combat illegal logging and promote sustainable forest management.

Governor Bassey Otu emphasized that this year’s theme “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” resonated profoundly with Cross River State, which is grappling with severe environmental challenges.

The governor said his administration has taken decisive actions against illegal logging cartels, empowering the state Ministry of Environment and the Forestry Commission, to spearhead initiatives aimed at regenerating the state’s rainforest.

He urged citizens to balance development with environmental conservation, achieving progress harmoniously with nature.

Also speaking at the event, the State Commissioner for Environment, Moses Osogi, acknowledged the state’s rich environmental resources, but noted that they were still vulnerable to land degradation, desertification, and drought.

The event marked a significant moment in the state’s ongoing environmental conservation efforts, reinforcing government’s commitment to sustainable development and the well-being of its natural ecosystem.
