The planned restrictions on tricycle and motorcycle operations in Umuahia and Aba between the hours of 7pm and 6am by the Abia State Government has continued to generate mixed reactions from the operators and residents of the state.
Some of the operators while speaking to journalists in the state, called on the state government to put in place improved security measures around flashpoints and strategic places to prevent people from falling victims to criminals.
The commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs, Uzor Nwachukwu who announced the restriction explained that a committee has been set up to ensure compliance to compulsory registration of all tricycles, Motorcycles and commercial vehicles operating in the state.
Chidiebere Nwosu, one of the operators of tricycle in Umuahia the Abia State capital is however concerned about the safety of visitors and residents who might arrive into the city during late night hours.
He and other operators want government to do a reappraisal of the planned restriction policy and the implications it might have on intra city travellers.
The restriction is scheduled to take effect on the first of July 2024.
