Protesters at the ongoing #EndBadGovernance demonstration in Lagos have expressed outrage over the government’s decision to confine them to a single location, Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota.
The protesters, who have been demanding an end to corruption, economic hardship, and poor leadership, described the government’s move as “wicked” and “undemocratic”.
Nneoma, an activist leading the protest, said, “This is an attempt to stifle our voices and suppress our constitutional right to peaceful assembly. We will not be confined to one location. We will continue to protest wherever we choose.”
The government cited security concerns when announcing that protesters would only be allowed to gather at Gani Fawehinmi Park. However, protesters argue that this decision infringes on their rights.
Tunde, a protester, said, “It’s a democratic dictatorship. They’re trying to dictate where we can and cannot protest. We won’t accept that.”
Despite the government’s decision, protesters have vowed to continue their demonstration, saying they will find ways to circumvent the restrictions.
Another protester, who wished to remain anonymous, said, “We’ll keep moving, we’ll keep protesting. We won’t let them silence us.”
In a disturbing development, police officers were seen pouring fuel into their van at the protest ground, a move protesters say is disheartening and indicative of bad governance.
The EndBadGovernance protest has been ongoing for three days, with more Nigerians joining in to demand a better future for their country.
