Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, with its headquarters at Kuta, has an estimated 2022 population of about 404,200, according to the Nigeria Bureau of Statistics and is housing one among the 4 hydroelectric power plants and dams, which has a power-generating capacity of 600 megawatts.
The area, dominated by the Gbagyi-speaking people, is predominantly farmers with vast arable lands, and appreciable deposits of mineral resources.
The area has however, been severely under terrorists attacks.
The areas most affected by terrorism are the eight political wards of the Lakpma axis, and Allawa, where people are being killed and displaced, as witnessed recently at Ungwa Mai-Gero, where 14 farmers were killed.
It is as a result of the incessant attacks and killings that turned the residents of the area into IDPs, that the Coalition of Shiroro Associations is calling on the federal government to act fast, or risk the agricultural revolution and feeding the nation much talked about.
The youths are also demanding that the federal government act swiftly and decisively, by redeploying military forces to Shiroro and other security-challenged areas in the state, to curb the wave of attacks.
They also demand that the Federal Government should compensate the people of Shiroro Local Government, especially the people of Allawa community, who have lost their properties and means of livelihood, in a bid to run for their lives, as a result of the withdrawal of the military without notice.
The association further urged both governments to provide the necessary support to local vigilante groups, to enhance security in the Shiroro Local Government.
