Less than 24 hours after Nigerians online slammed the alleged assaulted bolt driver, Stephen Abuwatsey for apologizing to the House of Representatives member, representing Aba north/south in Abia state, Alex Ikwechegh following an altercation during a package delivery led to an alleged assault, his legal team has officially announced the withdrawal of the case from court.
In statement issued and signed by his legal representative, Deji Adeyanju and partners on November 8, 2024, the firm said with careful consideration, its decision arrived from the recent developments and to protect professional intergrity for maintenance of highest ethical standard.
The legal team said it wished Stephen Abuwatseye well and assured the general public of a continuous commitment towards protecting the rights of the oppressed and indigent members of the society.
The apology and withdrawal of the alleged assault on the bolt driver and his legal team did not sit well with social media users who speculated that it was motivated by either threats or money inducement.
In a viral video, on october 2024, the federal lawmaker who is also a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA was seen in a heated exchange with the driver whom he accused of disrespect for asking him to approach the car to receive his package.
The incident sparked outrage on social media.
Two days later, Alex Ikwechegh was charged by the office of the inspector general of police and arraigned on a three-count charge bordering on assault and threat to life at a magistrate court in Kuje, Abuja and was granted a N500,000 bail after pleading not guilty to the charges filed by the office of the inspector-general of police.
