The Sokoto State government has commenced the payment of the new minimum wage of ₦70,000 to civil servants in the State on Monday, January 27.
Gov. Ahmed Aliyu approved the commencement of the payment.
With the approval, civil servants in Sokoto State will enjoy the new minimum wage with their January salaries.
According to the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Aliyu, Abubakar Bawa, the payment will cover State civil servants and Local Government staff.
The government urged civil servants in the State to reciprocate the good gesture by being alive to their duties and responsibilities.
The Governor promised to sustain the prompt payment of salaries between the 19th and the 22nd day of every month, noting that his administration will remain workers-friendly.
Before the advent of the present administration in Sokoto State, workers salaries were paid after 50 days as against the usual 25-30 days.
However, the Ahmed Aliyu administration has been consistent in paying workers between the 19th and 22nd of every month, just as the backlog of unpaid gratuities of retirees is being defrayed.
The State government had set aside N500 million monthly for the payment of the backlog of gratuities, while an additional N300 million has also been set aside monthly to pay those that retired from 2023 to date.
The decision, according to the government, is to ensure that at the end of the administration’s tenure, no civil servant would be owed any gratuity by the Sokoto State government.
