Available statistics show that there are about 40 million students in schools in Nigeria and 80% of them are in public schools hence Investing in public schools education is no longer optional but a task for both the private sector and government.
In Abia state, there is the public- private sector initiative called Fostering Innovation Reform School Transformation, AbiaFIRST, which is targeted at completely transforming the education in South East State.
The United Nations Education and Socio-Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has stipulated that a nation should allocate 26% of its total budget to the education sector.
However, Nigeria has never surpassed a 10% allocation in this sector. UNESCO’s goals include improving access to education, enhancing teaching quality, and promoting lifelong learning.

At the inauguration of the Fostering Innovation Reform School Transformation, AbiaFIRST, a public- private sector initiative, in Umuahia, the UNESCO representative in Nigeria reaffirmed commitment to supporting and partnering with the Abia State Government through capacity-building initiatives to enhance educational development.
The Abia state government said it will dedicate quality time and resources to education sector to guarantee qualitative education delivery to pupils and students in public schools across the state.
The World Bank Senior Education Specialist, Tunde Adekola, and a representative of the British Council Office in Abuja also pledged to support the Abia state government in its bold steps to lead the way in ensuring qualitative education in public schools across the state.
