Following the resident doctors’ strike that has entered its second week, consultants and locum doctors at the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Dala in Kano State, have been helping out to attend to emergency cases.

This is just as the management of the hospital said, they are not considering using National Youth Service Corps members to replace the striking doctors.

The ongoing strike has crippled activities at the hospital, as the wards have remained empty, except for emergency cases.

The Head of Clinical Services at the hospital, Mamman Lawal, said the hospital is not running at full capacity, as only accident emergencies are being attended to, with the help of locum doctors and consultants.

He said, though the task is heavy on the locum doctors and consultants, they are not considering replacing the resident doctors with corps members.

The Secretary of the resident doctors at the hospital, Kamaludeen Mohammed said, the “no work, no pay” policy cannot apply to them

The prolonged strike by the resident doctors has forced other patients, not in emergency, to seek alternatives elsewhere.
