Major actors in the environment and Energy fields in Nigeria are meeting in Abuja to brainstorm on environmental issues related to the creation of nuclear power plant.

The workshop is focused on designing an environmental regulatory framework for Nigeria.

Nuclear power is a top clean Energy source that is capable of taking care of Nigeria’s supply needs. A major concern related to nuclear power is radioactive waste such as uranium, used reactor fuel and other wastes.

These materials can remain radioactive and dangerous to the environment and human health for thousands of years.

Those saddled  with the project of a nuclear power plant are familiarising themselves with the environmental impact assessment in line with the IAEA policy globally.

This Abuja workshop is therefore expected to deliberate on 19 infrastructure issues as they relate to the national integrated work plan of Nigeria.

The four-day workshop has environmental agencies and civil society organisations from across the country in attendance.
