A group of labour leaders under the aegis of former Labour Leaders Forum, has called on the organised Labour, the NLC and TUC at the state and National levels to actively join hands with well-meaning Nigerians, civil society organisations and the good people of Rivers state to bring to immediate end the dangerous undemocratic precedent unleashed on Rivers state, almost a month ago.

The former labour leaders through its chairman and former President of NUPENG, Igwe Achese, in a press briefing said the call became necessary because it looks as though Organised Labour in the state has gone to sleep at a time they should stand in defence of democracy.

Today, April 18th, 2025 makes it exactly one month, since the declaration of state of emergency and appointment of Retired vice Admiral Ibok Ete- Ibas, as the administrator of Rivers State and according to the former labour leaders, led by former Nupeng president Achese Igwe, the March 18th 2025, declaration by President Bola Tinubu, can be likened to suspension of democracy and the constitution of Nigeria in Rivers state

The former labour leaders, also queried the dismantling of existing democratic structures in the state, arbitrarily appointing sole administrators for the Local Government councils, dissolving and reconstituting Boards, commissions and Governing councils by Retired Vice Admiral Ete Ibas .

They called on organised labour to rise up to the occasion and defend democracy if they are truly in solidarity with the people.

The group called on President Bola Tinubu to reconsider his action and recall Siminilayi Fubara, his Deputy, Professor Ngozi Ordu and members of the state House of Assembly in the interest of peace and democracy.
