In its bid to curtail the growing rate of extrajudicial killings and human rights violation in the country, the European Union and its partners have engaged private security actors in Rivers State to organize a capacity-building workshop focusing on principles of security and human rights.
The training workshop for private security actors is targeted at identifying human right risks and meaningful steps to address those risks in a manner that would help to ensure respect for human rights in their operations.
Issues of extrajudicial killings and constant human rights violations in Nigeria by state actors and private security operatives are a reoccurring decimal that needs proactive measures to nip the menace in the bud.
The recent killing of some hunters transiting through uromi in Edo state to the northern part of the country is one of such cases that could have been avoided if a common ground approach was adopted to address the misunderstanding.

And to make the job of security operatives easy in a tensed atmosphere, The European Union in partnership with search for common ground foundation for partnerships initiative in the Niger Delta, engaged private security actors in community centred approach to address these issues of human rights violations and extrajudicial killings.
For the participants, the training is apt, as the Voluntary Principles on security and human rights provided a framework to Conduct comprehensive assessment of human rights violation associated with security.
The refresher peer exchange workshop for private security actors is also aimed at promoting inclusion and participation in decision making.
