Cross River State Government has flagged off the training of 2,000 cassava farmers across the 18 local government areas of the state, with an inaugural session in Akpabuyo.
The training, a major step under Governor Bassey Otu’s agricultural empowerment drive, is designed to equip farmers with modern techniques for cassava cultivation and boost its commercial production.
To launch the project, 500 hectares of land has been mapped out for immediate cultivation, with plans to expand as more farmers are trained.
Representing the governor at the event, the Permanent Secretary in the State Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation, Ekpe Bassey, said the initiative would not only improve farmers’ yields but also enhance food security and economic growth through the introduction of mechanized farming methods.

The farmers to be trained expressed optimism that the knowledge to to be acquired would transform their farming practices and increase their income.
With the training set to take place across other local government areas, the State Government says it remains committed to repositioning agriculture as a major driver of the economy, while empowering farmers to compete in both local and international markets.
