The Nigerian Red Cross Society has advised residents of flood prone communities in Kogi State to adhere to the early warning signs and relocate to higher ground.
The society gave the advice during an event to distribute hygiene and sanitary items to some 500 women affected by the 2024 flood disaster in Kogi state in partnership with the European Union Humanitarian Aid.
Kogi is among the high-risk flood states, as predicted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) in 2025.
Ahead of the rainy season, some states have started putting in place measures to checkmate the flooding expected to inundate no fewer than 1,249 communities in 176 local governments across 30 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
To complement government efforts, the Acting Branch Secretary of the Nigeria Red Cross Society in Kogi State, Abdullahi Abubakar, says the organization has been encouraging people in flood-prone communities in Kogi State to ensure their safety first as this year’s natural disaster draws closer.
Some of the beneficiaries commended the Nigerian Red Cross Society for the proactive steps taken so far ahead of this year’s predicted flooding.
The forum called for continuous public enlightenment campaigns, dredging of water channels, and relocating communities on riverbanks and floodplains to mitigate the devastating effects of the flood in 2025.
