People in coastal communities of the niger Delta region say the activities of multi nationals and other social activities are negatively impacting their communities in ways they never imagined due to climate change.
Rising from a two-day training and learning workshops on climate change as a cause of conflict in coastal communities organised by Academics associates peace works in port Harcourt the people therefore canvassed for the strengthening of the existing environmental laws to save the ecosystem of the Niger Delta region.
The coastal communities in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria have been facing significant environmental challenges due to climate change and soil degradation orchestrated by the oil exploration by multi nationals operating in the region.
The Port Harcourt workshop facilitated by the academic associates’ peace works is therefore targeted at educating community stakeholders on climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies.
The people from the communities called for the strengthening of the already existing environmental laws to protect the ecosystem of the Niger Delta region.
The two-day training also focused on communal conflict management to promote peaceful coexistence and it is expected that the people will now have a better approach to engage with one another, particularly the IOCs in a more peaceful manner.
