Members of the Nigerian Medical Association NMA and Society of Family Physicians of Nigeria have called for the prioritization of Mental Healthcare to prevent people from pushing beyond their limits, leading to a breakdown under the current socio-economic challenges.
Speaking on how to build mental resilience at a forum in Lagos, the experts emphasized the need to remove the stigmatization associated with mental health issues and for people to embrace support groups to withstand the realities of life.
The topic “Building Mental Resilience In a Changing World” discussed at the forum took cognizance of ongoing changes across the world especially Nigeria and how some of them have brought, stress, burnout and hardship on individuals, families and even the medical health professionals.

The Mental Health Bill of 2021 signed into law in 2023 by former president Muhammadu Buhari is to enhance and protect the lives of persons suffering from mental illness, but the high level of stigmatization and gap in psychiatrists to patients ratio makes expected outcomes seem far from reality.
The symposium was part of activities to mark the 2025 world family Physicians Day.
