The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, says it is intensifying flood preparedness efforts in Kogi State sequel to the 2025 seasonal rainfall predictions, which include warnings of possible severe flooding in various parts of the country.
The Director General of NEMA, Zubaida Umar Abubakar, said this when she led a team on a flood sensitization mission to vulnerable communities within kogi state.
NEMA’s advocacy campaign in Kogi State is part of proactive measures in response to the 2025 flood forecast issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NIMET.
According to the authorities at NEMA, the goal is to develop effective strategies to minimize the potential impact of flooding, particularly in the ten identified high-risk local government areas across kogi state.
Addressing residents during the visit, NEMA Director General, Zubaida Umar Abubakar, expressed concern over the recurring devastation caused by floods in Nigeria hence the importance of early warnings, strategic planning, and grassroots engagement to reduce loss of lives and property.

Residents were informed about the impending risks and were educated on safety measures, such as clearing drainage systems and preparing evacuation plans.
NEMA’s early warning initiative is part of a nationwide campaign to reduce the risks associated with seasonal flooding and the agency wants citizens living in flood-prone areas to stay alert and follow official guidance.
The team included representatives from the National Inland Waterways Authority, the Fire Service, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Kogi State Emergency Management Agency, Ministry of Health, Red Cross Society, and Civil Society Organizations, who visited flood-prone communities like Ganaja in the Lokoja metropolis.
