As tensions continue to rise in Lapai following the death of a student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBUL), Lapai, the Emir of Lapai, Umar Bago Tafida III, has cancelled the weekly Lapai Tuesday Market.
This, according to the monarch, is to honour the deceased student and to acknowledge the grief of the university community.
The Emir made this declaration during an emergency meeting at his palace with the management of IBB University, Students Union Executives, and key community stakeholders.
According to sources, to address the security concerns raised by students who went on a rampage to protest the incident and to restore peace, the monarch further announced the imposition of a temporary curfew in Lapai.
He also warned against individuals, both students and community members, who may be collaborating with or harbouring criminal elements in the town.
The Emir assured students that prompt and decisive measures are being taken to improve security and ensure that justice is served.
It was gathered that the Emir expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss and extended his condolences to the family of the late Abdulwahab Jafar and the entire university community.
Abdulwahab Jafar, a 200-level student of Science Education (Chemistry) and the only son of his parents, was attacked by armed robbers and killed in the early hours of Monday, June 23 at his off-campus residence, Nda Kitabu Lodge, located opposite the university’s second gate.
