The social media in Nigeria has been awashed over the story of one Basola Jamiu Owodunni, who said he wrote JAMB in 2017, secured admission to study civil engineering at federal university of technology Akure, FUTA, graduated in 2024, with a CPGA of 4.41, yet JAMB says his admission was fake, even after he finished his final examination, defended his project and completed school clearance.
In a post seen by ait.live Jamiu is also claiming that his JAMB portal has been blocked,
NYSC refused to mobilise him.
He was handed over to the DSS and police, even though FUTA checked and confirmed his name is on JAMB central admission processing system, CAPS, and even though the Vice Chancellor contacted JAMB
According to the post seen by AIT, Basola has no parents and he is an orphan who has reached out to JAMB office, the Public Complaint Commission and some media houses.
In a swift reaction, JAMB spokesman, Fabian Benjamin said its primary function is to scrutinize and approve candidates recommended for admissions by the institutions and ensure that only those who meet the requisite requirements are considered.
The JAMB Spokesman said the process aligns with the three foundational principles of admission as established by the proprietors of tertiary institutions and facilitated through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) – a tripodal procedure that includes: the institutions, the Board and candidates for transparency in admission.
Benjamin said in all these, the Board does not have the authority to propose or recommend candidates for admission, it only approves those recommended by the institutions, emphasising that a candidate is recognized by JAMB only if he or she has fulfilled all necessary conditions and has been recommended by the institution.

JAMB said in the case of Basola Jamiu Owodunni, who remains an unknown entity to the Board concerning admission, stressing that emotions have no place in the enforcement of laws; the provisions are explicit.
JAMB Argues that While there may be no dispute regarding his attendance at the university in question, JAMB asserts that he is not admitted by its records as he did not follow due process, and the Board lacks the power to insert him on the platform for him to be visible to the NYSC and other stakeholders.
Previously, there might have been possibilities for unauthorized admissions from tertiary institutions, but such a process has been prohibited.
AIT investigation however reveals that the central admission processing system, CAPS, which JAMB is holding on to deprive Basola Jamiu his admission letter was introduced with teething issues in 2017, the same year, the student sat the Unified tertiary matricularion examination, UTME.
It is the CAPS, JAMB said since introduced in 2017 has been instrumental to checkmating illegal processes in candidates’ placements across tertiary institutions in the country over time.
