The Nigerian Senate has postponed the North-West zonal public hearing on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, initially scheduled to hold this weekend in Kano State.

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio announced the postponement during Tuesday’s plenary, citing the recent passing of renowned philanthropist and elder statesman, Aminu Dantata, who died on Sunday.

He stated that the Deputy President of the Senate and Chairman of the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Constitution Review, Barau Jibrin, is currently in Saudi Arabia to attend the burial rites of the late Dantata.

Akpabio noted that a new date for the hearing will be set in consultation with stakeholders in the North-West once Senator Barau returns to the country.

He further clarified that the constitution review hearings in the other five geo-political zones North-East, North-Central, South-East, South-South, and South-West will proceed as scheduled.

According to the timetable, public hearings will be held in Borno, Plateau, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, and Lagos States.

The Senate thereafter observed a minute of silence in honour of the late Aminu Dantata.
