Gov. Uzodimma Signs Gender Violence Bill into Law

Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma has signed into law the bill on Gender-Based Violence Against Persons.

The bill was presented by the Speaker, Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Kennedy Ibe.

Giving his assent to the Bill, Governor Uzodimma described the occasion as an auspicious one, “coming at a time when the girl child and women face a lot of sexual abuses and violent attacks.

Commenting on the importance of the bill, Governor Uzodimma remarked that women also batter their husbands, noting that with the law, men can also refer to the law for protection.

Governor Uzodimma explained that the law provides for a database for all forms of sexual offences either against the girl child, the women or the men and called on all well-meaning Nigerians to make efforts and procure a copy of the law.

Speaking on the assented bill, the wife of the Governor, Lady Chioma Uzodimma expressed gratitude to the State House of Assembly for passing the document into law.

Earlier, while presenting the bill for assent, Speaker, Kennedy Ibe said the bill will provide maximum protection and effective remedies for victims and punishment for offenders.
