The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has again issued a strong warning to residents living in flood-prone areas of Kogi State to move to higher ground to avoid the devastating impact of flooding currently affecting several parts of the country.
The warning follows an on-the-spot assessment carried out by a NEMA team in Kabba Bunu Local Government Area, where flash floods recently displaced several families.
Days after torrential rainfall triggered flash floods in Kabba Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, affected residents are still grappling with the aftermath, counting their losses and calling for urgent government intervention to bring relief and long-term solutions.
NEMA’s Head of Operations, Abuja Office, Zakari Abubakar, who led the team on the assessment, sympathized with the victims and assured them that the agency stands in solidarity with them during this difficult time but reminded those residents living in flood-prone areas to urgently relocate to safer grounds to avoid further casualties.
The NEMA officials observed that the impact of the flooding was worsened by blocked drainages and human activities that hindered natural water flow.
Some of the community people again appealed to government to ensure sustainable flood control measures and improved disaster response frameworks to minimize the impact of future occurrences.
As Kogi State braces for more rains in the coming weeks, it is expected that government agencies, local authorities, and residents will work together to reduce the devastating impact of flooding through early warnings, sensitization, and targeted relief interventions.
