President Bola Tinubu has approved the renaming of the University of Maiduguri as Muhammadu Buhari University, in honour of the late former President.
The announcement was made by Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, via his official Twitter handle, @SundayDareSD, on Thursday.
According to Dare, the gesture is part of ongoing efforts by the Tinubu administration to immortalise the legacy of President Buhari, who passed away earlier this week.
He described the renaming as a fitting tribute to a leader who dedicated more than five decades of his life to public service and national development.
Located in Borno State, the University of Maiduguri holds symbolic importance, particularly for the North-East, where the Buhari administration invested heavily in education, security, and reconstruction efforts.
This development comes just days after a state funeral was held for the late President, who was buried in his hometown of Daura on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, Nigeria continues to mourn the death of former President, Muhammadu Buhari, as tributes pour in from across the country and beyond.
At a special session of the Executive Council Of the Federation held, Thursday at the Presidential Villa Abuja, President Tinubu and President of the Senate President Godswill Akpabio led heartfelt tributes, describing Buhari as a man of honour, duty, and uncommon discipline.
Inside the Council chambers where the late President Muhammadu Buhari himself, chaired several meetings, Nigeria’s top leadership gathered, not to deliberate, but to remember him.
President Tinubu paid glowing tribute to his predecessor, calling him “first among citizens in peace and war,” and “a man whose presence summoned the best in us.”
Tinubu recalled Buhari’s journey from a young soldier in Nigeria’s civil war, to Head of State, and later, to a democratically elected president who governed with restraint and returned to hometown of Daura without clinging to power.
Also speaking at the session, President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio described Buhari as a man of principle and purpose, who walked “with steadiness and often in solitude, along the ridge of national conscience.”
Most speakers at the session said that late President Buhari’s legacy was marked by anti-corruption efforts, infrastructural strides, and a firm stance on national unity which continues to spark reflection across political lines.
President Tinubu led Buhari’s final journey home to Daura, where he was laid to rest earlier this week in a quiet, dignified ceremony.
President Muhammadu Buhari former military leader, civilian president, and, as many described him, “the People’s General” is gone, but his legacy, both contested and celebrated, continues to shape Nigeria’s path forward.
