Some residents of Bauchi have lamented the high level of poverty in the country, which they say has denied them access to proper healthcare.

The concern was raised at a free medical outreach sponsored by a Christian faith-based organization in the diaspora and Nigeria

It was a massive turnout at the free medical outreach jointly organized by a Christian faith-based organisation in partnership with Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Bauchi State chapter.

Most of the beneficiaries, visibly elderly and frail, expressed their struggles in accessing medical care due to financial difficulties.

From their faces and voices, it was evident that the economic hardship in the country is taking a toll on their health and wellbeing.

Among them were Yunusa and Apolos, who narrated in Hausa how they have been battling chronic illnesses for years, with doctors recommending surgeries they cannot afford.

“It’s barely two years now since I became ill. It started like a joke, but due to my economic condition, I cannot afford the medical bills. That’s why I’m here to benefit from this free medical care.” Yunusa said.

“It’s over 30 years now I have been suffering from this illness with no solution. Look at this bag it’s filled with empty medicine packs I’ve used over the years. Doctors said I need surgery, but I can’t afford it” Apolos explained.

Organizers of the outreach said the initiative aims to cushion the effects of illness among the less privileged in society.

They explained that the outreach comprises three phases: physical healthcare, spiritual deliverance, and empowerment, cutting across religious lines, with the aim of giving back to society’s most vulnerable. The program is expected to run for three days.
