The Federal Government has launched the Net-Zero Nature-Positive Project (NZNP), a bold initiative to tackle climate change and biodiversity loss in an integrated way.
The initiative, supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), seeks to drive Nigeria’s transition towards a sustainable, low-carbon, and biodiversity-rich future.
At the inception workshop for the NZNP programme held in Abuja, stakeholders stressed that climate change and biodiversity loss are no longer distant threats but urgent realities confronting communities, ecosystems, and the national economy.
The unveiling of the Net-Zero Nature-Positive ( NZNP) Project by Nigeria’s Director of Forestry, Federal Ministry of Environment, Halima Bawa Bwari.
The NZNP Accelerator, is one of eleven Integrated Programs under the Global Environment Facilty GEF-8 cycle, which seeks to fast-track global efforts towards achieving net-zero emissions by investing in nature and technology.
Bwari reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to a net-zero and nature-positive future, one that goes beyond emission cuts to include resilience and social equity.
With this launch, Nigeria joins 11 other pioneering nations implementing the GEF-8 Accelerator Programme , driving collective action towards a Nature-Positive 2030 and Net-Zero 2060 target.
The project also focuses on inclusive growth that prioritizes women, youth, and indigenous communities, especially those in climate-vulnerable areas such as the Niger Delta region.
Experts agree that the threat of climate change and biodiversity loss are deeply interconnected, and addressing them together through the NZNP project presents the most effective path to sustainable development.
