A total of thirty-three inmates of the Lafia Custodial Centre, have been granted state pardon by Governor Abdullahi Sule in a move aimed at decongesting correctional facilities and promoting rehabilitation and reintegration.
The state pardon followed recommendations by the State Advisory Committee on Prerogative of Mercy and was announced during Governor Abdullahi Sule’s visit to the facility.
Governor Sule urged the beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity by becoming law-abiding citizens, warning that a return to crime could erode public confidence in future acts of clemency.
He noted that no female inmate benefited from the exercise, attributing this to the serious nature of offences committed by some women in custody.
The Governor also cautioned residents against violence and criminality, stressing that actions taken in anger often have lasting consequences.
As part of activities marking his birthday, Governor Sule shared a symbolic cake with the inmates to inspire hope and a sense of belonging.
The Nasarawa state Governor reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to justice, security collaboration, youth engagement and inclusive governance in Nasarawa State.
