The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), has announced that the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) will officially commence operations on Thursday, January 1, 2026, in line with the new tax law.

This was announced through a statement signed by Arabinrin Aderonke Atoyebi, Technical Assistant on Broadcast Media to the Executive Chairman of FIRS, according to her, the development marks the formal transition from the Federal Inland Revenue Service to a unified federal revenue authority designed to strengthen revenue mobilisation, transparency, and accountability for sustainable national development.

Atoyebi explained that the NRS represents a major structural reform aimed at modernising Nigeria’s revenue administration, introducing an integrated, technology-driven system that improves planning, service delivery, and taxpayer engagement.

According to her, while the identity of the institution has evolved, its core mandate remains unchanged, with professionalism, integrity, fairness, and national service continuing to guide its operations.

She added that staff across all offices nationwide remain central to the Service’s mission.

She noted that the NRS provides a stronger, more transparent framework that simplifies compliance for individuals and businesses, while ensuring the fair application of tax laws without favour or fear.

As Nigeria enters 2026, Atoyebi reaffirmed the Nigeria Revenue Service’s commitment to responsible revenue administration in support of sustainable national development.
